On Gas…

Gas prices seem to be on everyone’s mind these days. The cartoons are funny but the complaining is getting kind of old. One of the blogs I read is called Wisebread and it usually has some pretty good tips on saving money. A post came across the blog feed the other day about how a guy got 45 mpg out of his 31 mpg rated Passat. He didn’t come up with the tips but applied what others wrote. So I decided I’d give it a shot. I changed my driving habits during my last tank and found that I got just over 20 mpg, which in my 11 year old, 169k mile 4Runner is pretty good! That’s over 10% better! We’ll see how it goes with the next tank and if this was just a fluke.
Another realization I had today is that going much out of the way for a better price on gas isn’t always a great idea. I’ve checked houstongasprices.com lately before I know I need to fill up to see which station on my way home has the best price. The best price on the route home was $3.76, but I saw on the map a price of $3.73 at a Kroger not too far from the office. I can save an additional 3 cents with my Kroger card so that would be $3.70 a gallon. Six cents seems like a pretty good savings and not bad for this weeks price. Unfortunately, as prices go up those few cents savings have less and less of an impact. But, I went out of my way to fill up anyway. I didn’t realize exactly how far. It didn’t seem that far but ended up being 6 miles round trip. I figured out that at $3.70 a gallon it cost 20 cents a mile to drive the truck, so that means my trip cost me $1.20 and I only saved 89 cents on the fill up :( Luckily I was pretty happy about my 20+ mpg economy but I won’t be going out of my way for cheaper gas anymore.
